CVE-2026-72694 is a symlink-following vulnerability in the MRTG daemon's PID-file handling. When the daemon starts with root privileges and subsequently drops privileges, an unprivileged local attacker who can influence the PID-file location can pre-place a symbolic link to an existing target file. The root process follows the link when changing ownership, causing the target file to be reassigned to the MRTG daemon user.
