CVE-2026-72815 is an IP-spoofing vulnerability in the RealIP middleware of go-chi/chi versions 5.2.1 through versions before 5.3.0. The middleware blindly trusts the first, leftmost client address supplied in the HTTP X-Forwarded-For header. An unauthenticated remote client can provide an attacker-chosen address in that header, causing applications using the derived address to treat the request as originating from the spoofed client.

This nine-file Go repository is a local, self-validating proof of concept for CVE-2026-72815/GHSA-3fxj-6jh8-hvhx in go-chi/chi middleware.RealIP. It contains two standalone Go modules: vulnerable/ pins github.com/go-chi/chi/v5 v5.2.1 and demonstrates that RealIP trusts the leftmost X-Forwarded-For element, rewriting RemoteAddr to 127.0.0.1 and bypassing an IP-only ACL on /admin/secret. fixed/ pins v5.3.0 and demonstrates the intended migration to middleware.ClientIPFromXFF(), which selects the rightmost simulated client IP and rejects the same spoofed request. Both programs use net/http/httptest and an in-process router/recorder; they do not bind a listener or contact target systems. scripts/run-version-matrix.sh runs both examples. README files document affected versions, topology assumptions, mitigation, and the important caveat that upgrading alone is insufficient if an application continues using deprecated RealIP.
