CVE-2026-73194 is a heap out-of-bounds write in the SQL placeholder preparser in DBI for Perl before version 1.652. The preparser allocates output space assuming each input character can expand to no more than the width of a normal numbered placeholder. A numeric placeholder is parsed into the binder counter without range validation. An oversized value can cause integer wraparound to a negative counter; subsequent question-mark placeholders are expanded into longer negative numbered placeholders than the allocation accounts for. The existing maximum-placeholder check does not reject the negative counter. The affected path is the conversion to :pN-style placeholders; the question-mark and %s return styles reject an unexpected parsed sequence and are not affected.
