CVE-2026-77179 is a critical sandbox-escape vulnerability in the macOS virtio-fs host server used by Docker Sandboxes to share a workspace between a sandbox microVM and the host. When reopening an unlinked file from a previously stored pathname, the host component improperly follows symbolic links. Guest-controlled code can replace a parent directory with a symbolic link after the path has been recorded, racing the reopen operation and redirecting it outside the authorized shared workspace. The issue affects Docker Sandboxes 0.28.0 through 0.41.9 on macOS.

A critical symlink time-of-check/time-of-use vulnerability in the Docker Sandboxes virtio-fs host server on macOS. Malicious code running in a sandbox VM can escape the shared project directory and read or modify arbitrary host files with the privileges of the host account running the VM.
A critical symlink race/path-handling vulnerability in Docker Sandboxes' virtio-fs host server that can allow a malicious sandbox guest to escape its shared workspace and read or modify host files accessible to the VMM user, potentially leading to macOS host compromise.
A critical symlink race condition in Docker Sandboxes' virtio-fs host server that can allow a malicious guest workload to escape its approved shared workspace and read or modify host files accessible to the VMM user, potentially leading to macOS host compromise.
A symlink-following vulnerability in the macOS virtio-fs host server used by Docker Sandboxes. A malicious guest can replace a parent directory with a symlink during reopening of an unlinked file, escaping the shared workspace to read or modify arbitrary host files as the VMM user, with potential host code execution.
