CVE-2026-78301 is an improper validation vulnerability in BIND 9 named. A malformed authoritative zone containing an NS or DNAME node above the configured zone origin can cause named to incorrectly treat that node as a zone cut. Queries below the configured origin can consequently lose authoritative status and receive an out-of-zone delegation. In deployments where the same named instance is authoritative and recursive, named can follow this locally sourced delegation and cache attacker-supplied DNS data for names outside the configured zone. The malformed state remains effective until the affected zone is removed or corrected in the zone database. Affected versions are BIND 9.11.0 through 9.18.50, 9.20.0 through 9.20.27, 9.21.0 through 9.21.25, and corresponding affected Supported Preview Edition releases.
