CVE-2026-78679 is a command-line option injection flaw in GitPython TagReference.create() affecting versions 3.1.33 through 3.1.58. The method validated unsafe options derived from keyword arguments but omitted its positional path and reference arguments and did not use an end-of-options separator. A caller-controlled, hyphen-prefixed reference can therefore be interpreted by the native Git tag command as an option, including an option that reads a local file. The resulting file content is incorporated into the annotated tag message and can be recovered through tag metadata.
