CVE-2026-85394 is an algorithm-confusion vulnerability in python-jose through version 3.5.0. During HMAC initialization, the library insufficiently validates asymmetric keys and can accept a DER-encoded asymmetric public key lacking PEM armor or an SSH prefix as an HMAC secret. This enables use of an asymmetric public key as the secret for HS256 token signing. The issue is an incomplete fix for CVE-2024-33663.
