CVE-2026-87817 affects GitPython versions before 3.1.60. Improper validation of the Git directory location allows crafted repository-tracked metadata files to cause an attacker-controlled working-tree root to be recognized as trusted Git metadata. A malicious tracked pre-commit hook can then execute arbitrary code when a victim invokes GitPython's native index.commit() on the cloned or opened repository. The same metadata confusion can expose files outside the repository through configuration include processing and redirect configuration writes to an attacker-chosen directory.
