CVE-2026-96275 is a path-traversal vulnerability in Flatpak's extract_extra_data() handling of repository-provided extra data. The flaw combines symbolic-link following while resolving the files/extra checkout path with failure to sanitize ../ traversal sequences in blob names supplied through xa.extra-data-sources. A malicious or compromised Flatpak repository can thereby cause attacker-controlled content to be written outside the intended extraction directory. In system-wide installations, the privileged system helper performs the write as root. Flatpak 1.18.1 fixes the vulnerability.

A critical Flatpak path-traversal and symlink-following vulnerability in extract_extra_data() that permits a malicious or compromised repository to write attacker-controlled files to arbitrary host filesystem locations. System-wide installations perform the write as root.
An important Flatpak arbitrary-file-write vulnerability caused by symlink following in the files/extra path and unsanitized directory-traversal sequences in extra-data blob names. A malicious or compromised repository can exploit it during an install or update; system-wide installations can result in root-level arbitrary file writes and full system compromise.
An unpatched vulnerability identified as CVE-2026-96275, rated CVSS v3 9.8 (network-accessible, low attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact). The plugin identifies Debian Linux 12.0 and Flatpak in its CPE data.
A Flatpak arbitrary-root-file-write vulnerability caused by symlink handling and path traversal during extra-data extraction.
