CVE-2026-96279 is an arbitrary host-file read vulnerability in Flatpak OCI layer archive extraction. When rebasing OCI archive entry pathnames into the intended extraction directory, Flatpak did not similarly rebase hardlink targets. A crafted layer containing a hardlink with an absolute target can cause libarchive to create a link to a host-resident file within the extraction directory, exposing the target file's contents. The issue is fixed in Flatpak 1.18.1.

A remotely exploitable, low-complexity vulnerability requiring no privileges or user interaction, with high potential impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability on affected Ubuntu LTS systems. The content does not describe the underlying technical flaw.
A medium-severity Flatpak OCI-layer archive extraction flaw that permits disclosure of host-file contents through crafted absolute hardlink targets. An attacker controlling an OCI registry could exploit it when a user performs a Flatpak install or update.
A Flatpak arbitrary-host-file-read vulnerability caused by hardlink path traversal during OCI archive extraction.
