Remexi is a custom Windows backdoor associated with the Iranian threat group Chafer, also tracked as APT39. It has been used in targeted surveillance-oriented intrusions, including operations against organizations in sectors such as telecommunications and travel-related services in the Middle East and nearby regions. The malware is part of Chafer’s broader espionage toolset and has been deployed alongside script-based components and additional collection utilities.
Remexi supports persistent access through multiple Windows autostart mechanisms, including scheduled tasks and Registry Run entries. It uses AutoIt and VBScript components during execution, and its configuration data is decrypted with XOR using fixed-length keys. For command execution, it can invoke Windows Management Instrumentation through wmic.exe. The malware is capable of collecting usernames from compromised systems, capturing keystrokes, stealing clipboard contents, and taking screenshots, including capturing active windows and retrieving their titles. Stolen data is exfiltrated over the same channel used for command and control, with BITSAdmin used as both a communications and exfiltration mechanism.
