Researchers tied multiple 2017 intrusion campaigns to the Iranian threat activity tracked as Greenbug and OilRig, linking them through shared malware, infrastructure, and targeting patterns. Palo Alto Networks reported OilRig using an ISMDoor variant possibly connected to Greenbug, while ClearSky later identified a broader infrastructure set built around lookalike domains impersonating Israeli high-tech and cybersecurity firms, as well as a Saudi industrial company. ClearSky said a sample named WmiPrv.tmp submitted from Iraq used command-and-control domains including thetaraysecurityupdate[.]com and securepackupdater[.]com, and additional domains, IPs, hashes, and an SSL certificate suggested further preparation for targeting related organizations or third parties.
A separate campaign attributed to OilRig hit numerous Israeli organizations with malicious Microsoft Word documents sent from compromised Ben-Gurion University email accounts. The documents exploited CVE-2017-0199 to launch HTA payloads through mshta.exe and install a fileless Helminth Trojan variant, affecting high-tech, medical, and education entities and reaching more than 250 individuals, according to CERT-IL. The operation used command-and-control infrastructure including vpsupdate[.]tk, alenupdate[.]info, and maralen[.]tk, and maintained persistence with scheduled tasks disguised as Google update jobs while deploying customized Mimikatz-based batch scripts for reconnaissance and credential theft.

An ISMdoor sample named WmiPrv.tmp was submitted to VirusTotal from Iraq. The sample used thetaraysecurityupdate[.]com and securepackupdater[.]com for command and control.
Additional domains impersonating Israeli firms and one Saudi company were registered, including biocatchsecurity[.]com, corticasecurity[.]com, covertixsecurity[.]com, arbescurity[.]com, and ymaaz[.]com. ClearSky assessed them as infrastructure for likely future targeting.
Greenbug registered several lookalike domains impersonating Israeli companies, including outbrainsecupdater[.]com, securelogicupdater[.]com, and wixwixwix[.]com. These domains were later assessed as likely prepared for future targeting.
Morphisec began investigating the campaign after observing the attacks against Israeli organizations and later linked the activity to the Iranian group associated with OilRig.
A politically motivated campaign targeted numerous Israeli organizations using compromised Ben-Gurion University email accounts and malicious Word documents exploiting CVE-2017-0199. CERT-IL said the activity reached more than 250 individuals across Israeli companies.
Morphisec reported that vpsupdate[.]tk, used by the Helminth malware's DnE1.Ps1 component for command and control, was first registered shortly before the Israeli campaign.
Microsoft released a security patch for CVE-2017-0199 before the later Israeli-targeting campaign. Morphisec said the attackers exploited the gap between patch release and deployment.
The domain thetaraysecurityupdate[.]com, impersonating ThetaRay, was registered and later used as command-and-control infrastructure tied to Greenbug activity.
Morphisec said the 2017 Israeli campaign's infrastructure and Helminth agent closely matched an OilRig campaign that targeted 140 financial institutions in the Middle East in 2016.
ClearSky updated its report to remove three hashes after determining they had been mistakenly included and were unrelated to the campaign.
ClearSky published a report linking Greenbug to lookalike domains mimicking Israeli high-tech and cybersecurity companies and one Saudi industrial company. The report said there was no indication the impersonated companies had actually been targeted or impacted.
Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 published research on OilRig using an ISMDoor variant and noted a possible link to the Greenbug threat group.
