Amnesty International reported that FinSpy spyware was deployed in Egypt through a September 2019 campaign in which the NilePhish group used a fake Adobe Flash update site, flash.browserupdate[.]download, to deliver a Windows dropper. The investigation linked the infrastructure to NilePhish through shared developer artifacts, including the username "shenno," overlapping hosting patterns, and related phishing domains. Amnesty also identified a separate public server exposing previously undisclosed macOS and Linux FinSpy variants, alongside newer Android and Windows samples, indicating that the commercial surveillance platform had expanded into a broader cross-platform toolkit.
The uncovered samples showed FinSpy using modular surveillance features including keylogging, file monitoring, audio and camera capture, screen recording, shell execution, and encrypted command-and-control over HTTP POST on port 443. Researchers also highlighted extensive anti-analysis and obfuscation measures: the macOS and Linux builds used LLVM-Obfuscator, while later reverse-engineering work demonstrated that FinSpy employed techniques such as control-flow flattening and mixed Boolean-arithmetic obfuscation, which analysts were able to detect and simplify with specialized heuristics and tooling. The findings reinforced concerns that FinSpy, sold by Munich-based FinFisher GmbH, continued to evolve while being used in operations affecting civil society and human rights defenders.
